5 PROBLEMS YOUR HOME MAY FACE THIS RAINY SEASON

Every year, the rainy season arrives in Nigeria between April and October and with it comes a familiar but often underestimated set of problems. For many homeowners and business operators, the instinct is to wait until something breaks down visibly before taking action. By then, the cost in repairs, health consequences, and lost productivity is far higher than it needed to be.

Nigeria’s rainy season is a period of heightened risk for homes, offices, and commercial facilities across the country. What follows are five of the most common and consequential problems the season brings, backed by research, and what you can do to address each one before it escalates.

  1. Mud, Dirt and Wet Floors at Every Entrance

This is the most immediate and visible consequence of the rainy season. Every time someone walks in from outside through a front door at home or through an office lobby, they bring dirt across floors faster than they can be cleaned.

For offices and commercial facilities, this problem carries additional weight. The entrance is the first thing every client, partner, or visitor sees. A dirty, mud-streaked lobby or a foul-smelling foot mat communicates negligence.

What you can do: Place heavy-duty foot mats at every entrance and commit to cleaning or replacing them regularly. For offices, consider scheduling a professional deep clean of your entrance area, rugs and floor mats at least twice a month during the rainy season to maintain your space.

  1. Dampness and Mold in Fabrics and Walls

This problem begins with a faint musty smell that is difficult to locate. Within days or weeks, mold and mildew begin forming in the fibres of carpets, sofas, curtains, and rugs and in many cases, on walls and ceilings.

The science behind this is straightforward. Mold spores thrive in humid conditions and require only moisture, warmth, and an organic surface to begin growing. Humidity levels in Lagos regularly exceed 85 percent during peak rainy months. The World Health Organization has confirmed that indoor mold is associated with increases in asthma, respiratory infections, coughing, and upper respiratory symptoms.

What you can do: Ensure your space is well ventilated throughout the season. If a persistent damp smell develops, address it immediately rather than masking it with air fresheners or diffusers. Book a professional carpet, upholstery, and fabric cleaning. It removes the moisture, bacteria, and mold spores that household cleaning methods rarely reach.

  1. Pest and Insect Infestation

When the rainy season arrives and grounds begin to flood, pests lose their outdoor shelter. Cockroaches, ants, rodents, and other insects are suddenly displaced and move rapidly into the nearest dry, warm environment, which is typically your home or office.

The more serious concern, however, is mosquitoes. Unlike other pests that are driven indoors by rain, mosquitoes actively breed during this period. Standing water left behind by rainfall in gutters, flowerpots, drainage channels, and containers becomes a breeding ground. Mosquito populations multiply rapidly during this period and the health consequences are well documented and severe.

Do not wait until you can see them. By the time pests are visible in your space, they have already settled in and multiplied significantly.

What you can do: Preventive fumigation before the season peaks is consistently more effective and more affordable than reactive treatment after an infestation has taken hold. Seal any cracks or gaps in walls and floors, clear out standing water regularly, and ensure drainage systems are not blocked.

  1. Dirty Windows, Glass Facades and Grimy Building Exteriors

There is a widespread assumption that rain cleans buildings. What rain actually does is carry dust, environmental pollutants, and airborne residue from the atmosphere and deposit all of it onto your windows, walls, glass facades, rooftops, and exterior tiles as it falls. The result is a layer of streaks, watermarks, brown residue, and in some cases the beginning of algae and moss formation on exterior walls.

Left unaddressed, rainy season residue compounds with every downpour. Algae and moss begin forming on exterior walls and rooftops and over time, these become significantly harder and more expensive to remove, and in some cases, begin damaging the surface materials themselves.

What you can do: For homes, schedule regular window and exterior cleaning throughout the season rather than waiting for the dry months. For commercial buildings with high-rise facades, glass walls, solar panels, rooftops, or any hard-to-reach surface, drone cleaning technology now offers the safest and most thorough solution available.

  1. Blocked Drainage and Post-Rain Debris

The rainy season consistently exposes infrastructure weaknesses that were easy to overlook during the dry months. Gutters that were slightly blocked become completely clogged.

Post-rain debris accumulation, leaves, waste, and organic matter, on grounds and rooftops, also creates conditions for mold growth and pest infestation, compounding several of the other problems covered in this article.

What you can do: Clear gutters and drainage channels before the season begins and inspect them regularly throughout. Remove post-rain debris from grounds, rooftops, and outdoor spaces promptly. For larger facilities and commercial properties, schedule a post-rain cleaning service.

Every issue covered in this article is either preventable or significantly more manageable when addressed early. The challenge is that most people and organizations respond reactively waiting until the mold smell is undeniable, until pests have settled in, until the building exterior looks irreparably grimy. By that point, the cost in time, money, and organizational disruption is considerably higher than the cost of getting ahead of it.
